“Toys are us” 2008
The Shikara boat is a symbol of pleasure, peace and serenity, endemic to life in Kashmir. The current scenario in the valley is anything but; which is why the artist’s assemblage of toy guns, that form a dark skeletal specter of what was once heaven on earth, is a sharp comment on the current ground reality. The gun is a symbol of violence and power, whether military or terrorist. Here it is also a toy, which annunciates the callousness with which violence is perpetrated.
